WE’VE
COME A LONG WAY BABY...
but still have a long way to go!
The history of vitamins goes back to ancient Egypt, when
it was recognized that ‘night blindness’ was caused by a
Vitamin A deficiency and could be cured by eating
certain foods. They didn’t know it then, but that was
the first time an antioxidant was given credit for
better health. That was 3,500 years ago and the
mainstream medical community is still not all on the
same page when it comes to nutrition and the
requirements of our bodies for living a long healthy
life.
Too many medical practioners are content to view the RDA
(Recommended Daily Allowance) for nutrients as sufficient. And
while the RDA will prevent deficiency diseases, those standards
will not be of much value in the prevention of degenerative
diseases. What’s the difference? RDA’s are amounts needed to
keep a person from suffering a deficiency disease. The Vitamin A
example is one of those. |

The next oldest deficiency disease that was discovered was
scurvy. Before the late 1700’s, more British sailors died of
this disease, that caused hemorrhaging, diarrhea and then death,
than died fighting wars. The native Americans had been drinking
pine bark tea since the 1500’s for the prevention of scurvy and
finally in 1795, the navy started requiring all ships to carry
citrus juice on board all their ships. It was found that only 2
tablespoons of juice daily prevented this debilitating and
sometimes fatal disease.
Beriberi
is a disease that causes anemia and paralysis and was cured
simply in the 1800’s by substituting unpolished rice for
polished rice.
Pellegra is a disease that is still common in some parts
of the world, mainly the poor ones. It causes skin conditions,
diarrhea and eventually mental deterioration and is cured by the
Vitamin B3, or niacin.
Ricketts
which is a bone softening disease, as recent as the early
1920’s, was cured by adding Vitamin D to milk

In the
1930’s, vitamins were beginning to be produced in pill form and
ever since, science is making new discoveries at a rapid pace
regarding proper dosages that will prevent diseases. Sadly, for
the most part, the mainstream medical community clings to the
idea that you can achieve optimum health and longevity by eating
foods alone. This couldn’t be farther from the facts. At one
time that may have been true, but the soils on which our food is
grown are now depleted from the nutrients they used to have due
to over-farming. And now, our foods are bombarded with chemical
fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides, at our peril. That’s one
reason that everyone needs to educate themselves to be their own
health advocate.
Skin vitamins are an extension of this knowledge.
The scientific community now recommends many times the standard
RDA for the prevention of the four leading most destructive
degenerative diseases; heart disease, stroke, cancer and
diabetes. And specific
skin vitamins when applied topically and
ingested internally can not only roll back the clock a bit but
prevent your largest and most precious organ, your skin, from
further damage.
Specific
skin vitamins and
nutrients would include: A, E, C, CoEnzyme Q10, grape seed
extract, green tea extract and
essential fatty acids.
But not all supplements are created equal. Your choice should
always be quality first and price second. As always, read the
labels. Your supplements should have:
-
A broad
spectrum of antioxidants in large amounts
-
Be from
pure, non-genetically modified sources
-
Be
manufactured to ‘pharmeceutical’ standards, because
currently, the FDA does not regulate what manufacturers say
is on the label is even there, or what they put in the
bottle will not be harmful
It's
up to YOU... the consumer to be pro-active. Educate
yourself …for yourself.
